Mian Sharif were seven brothers. They lived in a small village named Jathi Umra, which is in the suburb of Amritsar. It was the single house of Muslims in Sikh village. Mian Barkat was the elder son of the family, he was from the first wife of Mian Ramzan Hakeem. Later on, his mother died. Mian Ramzan Hakeem remarried and had six sons and one daughter from his second wife. The whole family was destitute. Mian Barkat and Mian Shafi couldn't bear the poverty of the family. So, they both went to Lahore and started working in an iron furnace. Their job was to grind the iron in return, got one rupee a day. The family admitted Mian Sharif in a school. It located four kilometers far away from Jathi Umra named Nevi Sirrli. He got primary education from it. After that, he went to Lahore and started working with his brothers. In the morning, he went to Muslim High School RamGali while, in the evening, he grinds the iron. After matric, he got admission in Islamia College Railway road. Due to poverty, he submitted a fee waiver application in College. The teacher saw his hard hands and forgave his homework. Mian Sharif took a loan from his uncle and started his own work. He buy an Iron furnace from Haji Feroze in 310 rupees. Later on, his brothers joined him. In 1945 a British customer told him about another British person who lived in Karachi and, he was specialized in making caste iron from scrap iron. Mian Sharif went to Karachi and hired him on a job in his furnace. He joined them in Lahore and that small furnace became Ittefaq Group. Till 1960 there were two groups in the business of iron. Number one was BECO and the second one was the Ittefaq Group. In 1972 Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto nationalized all the private firms. The owner of BECO left Pakistan and went to Germany. On the other hand, Mian Sharif took a loan from the bank and again started his furnace from zero level.
